Replacement Windows & Window Installation in Pittsburgh

Pella, Marvin, Andersen and ProVia replacement windows, installed by our own crews.

Ireland Contracting is a Pittsburgh window company installing replacement windows across Pittsburgh and Western PA: Pella wood-clad, Marvin wood, Andersen 100 Series and A-Series, and ProVia vinyl units, measured to your openings and installed by our own crews rather than a subcontractor. From replacing a single leaking window to new windows for the whole house, the result is a draft-free fit, clean trim inside and out, and lower heating bills through a Pittsburgh winter.

Most of the windows we replace are original to the house: rope-and-pulley wood sashes in Mt. Lebanon, Bellevue, and Squirrel Hill, or first-generation vinyl from the 1990s that has fogged between the panes. Either way, the symptoms are the same: drafts you can feel from the couch, condensation on the inside glass, sashes that won't stay up, and a furnace that runs all night. A modern double- or triple-pane window with low-E glass and an argon fill fixes all of it at once.

We install four brands so the frame material matches the house and the budget. ProVia vinyl is the value choice for most homes: low-maintenance, well insulated, and backed by a lifetime transferable warranty. As an Andersen Certified Contractor we install the Andersen 100 Series, built from Fibrex composite, a step up from vinyl that comes in dark colors, and the A-Series, with a solid wood interior and a weather-resistant exterior. Pella wood-clad windows give you real wood inside with an aluminum exterior that never needs painting, which suits the region's brick and stone homes. Marvin wood windows are for historic and custom work where the profile and the species matter. We'll show you the options side by side and tell you which we'd put in your house.

Full-frame or insert? An insert (pocket) replacement keeps your existing frame and trim and is the faster, less expensive route when the old frame is sound. A full-frame replacement removes everything down to the rough opening so we can inspect and reflash the sill, the right call when there's rot, water staining, or you want to change the window size. We check the frames on the measure visit and recommend one or the other, not both.

One thing we don't do: window repair. We don't replace glass, reglaze sashes, or fix balances on existing units. If a window has failed, we replace the whole unit properly rather than patching it, and we'll tell you honestly if it's only one or two windows that need it.

Replacing windows in Pittsburgh's older homes

Pittsburgh's housing stock is old. Most of the homes we work on in Allegheny County were built before 1960, and a lot before 1930. Those houses have plaster returns, out-of-square openings, and original wood frames that have been painted a dozen times. Replacing windows in them is a different job than in a 2005 subdivision: openings are measured individually, sills often need rebuilding, and any home built before 1978 is handled under EPA lead-safe work practices when we disturb painted trim.

The climate matters too. Our winters push heat out through single-pane glass and uninsulated frames, and freeze-thaw cycles work water into any gap around the unit. That's why we foam and flash every opening rather than relying on caulk, and why we steer most homeowners to a low-E, argon-filled double pane at minimum, the upgrade you feel most on a January night.

Because we also do siding, soffit, and fascia, we finish the exterior side properly: capped in aluminum or trimmed in Azek to match the house, so there's no bare wood left to weather.

Our windows process

  1. 1 In-home measure & consult. We measure every opening, check the frames and sills, and help you choose brand, frame material, style, and glass package for each room.
  2. 2 Custom order. Your windows are built to your exact opening sizes, typically four to eight weeks depending on brand and options.
  3. 3 Installation. Our crew removes the old units, sets, shims, foams, and flashes the new ones, and finishes interior and exterior trim. A handful of windows is usually a day; whole-home jobs one to two days.
  4. 4 Final walkthrough. We operate and lock every window with you, register the manufacturer warranty, and leave the house clean.

Windows FAQs

How much do replacement windows cost in Pittsburgh?

Cost depends on the number of openings, their sizes, the frame material (vinyl costs less than wood-clad or wood), the glass package, and whether each window is an insert or full-frame replacement. We provide a free, itemized estimate per window rather than a blanket price.

Do you install Pella and Marvin windows?

Yes. We install Pella wood-clad, Marvin wood and fiberglass, Andersen, and ProVia vinyl replacement windows, and we'll help you compare them for your home.

Do you install Andersen windows?

Yes. Ireland Contracting is an Andersen Certified Contractor, and we install two Andersen lines: the 100 Series, made from Fibrex composite as a stronger, low-maintenance alternative to vinyl, and the A-Series, with a solid wood interior and a fiberglass and composite exterior. Both carry Andersen's transferable Owner-to-Owner limited warranty, with 20 years of coverage on the glass.

Vinyl, wood-clad, or fiberglass: which should I choose?

Vinyl (ProVia) is the best value and needs no upkeep. Composite (Andersen 100 Series) sits between vinyl and wood: stronger than vinyl and available in dark colors. Wood-clad (Pella) gives you a real wood interior with a maintenance-free aluminum exterior and suits brick and stone homes; the Andersen A-Series pairs a wood interior with a fiberglass and composite exterior. Fiberglass and all-wood (Marvin) are the choice for historic profiles and custom sizes.

Should I get insert or full-frame replacement windows?

Inserts keep your existing frame and trim and cost less; full-frame replacement removes everything to the rough opening so we can fix rot and reflash the sill. We inspect each frame on the measure visit and recommend the right one per window.

Do you repair windows or replace broken glass?

No. Ireland Contracting replaces windows; we don't repair glass, sashes, or balances on existing units. If only one or two windows have failed, we'll replace just those.

How long does window replacement take?

Once your custom windows arrive, a few windows are usually installed in a single day and most whole-home projects in one to two days. Lead time on the order itself is typically four to eight weeks.

How far ahead should I book to have new windows in before winter?

Count back from the cold. Replacement windows are built to order, typically four to eight weeks depending on brand and options, and the installation itself takes a day or two. To have new windows in before a Pittsburgh winter, book the free measure visit in late summer or early fall so your order is in the build queue early.

How do I choose a window company in Pittsburgh?

Check that the contractor is registered with the PA Attorney General as a home improvement contractor, installs with its own crews rather than subcontractors, offers more than one brand, measures every opening in person, and gives you an itemized estimate per window. Ireland Contracting is registered under PA #026195, installs Pella, Marvin, Andersen, and ProVia windows with our own crews, and has served Pittsburgh homeowners since 1994.

Will new windows cut drafts and noise?

Yes. Double- and triple-pane low-E glass with an argon fill, properly foamed and flashed into the opening, noticeably reduces drafts, condensation, and street noise compared with older single-pane or failed double-pane units.
