Allegheny County
Mt. Lebanon Siding, Windows & Exterior Services
Roofing, roof repair, siding, and windows for Mt. Lebanon's older brick and stone homes.
Mt. Lebanon's houses are older than Allegheny County's as a whole: the median home here was built in 1953, and nearly a third of the municipality's houses predate 1940. Ireland Contracting roofs, sides, and replaces windows on those brick and stone Tudors and Colonials, with Owens Corning Platinum Preferred roofing crews and a repair technician who handles the small jobs older houses generate.

A trolley suburb, then a 1920s boom
Mt. Lebanon grew in two waves. The streetcar turned farmland into a trolley suburb around 1901, and the 1924 opening of the Liberty Tubes set off the automobile-era plans of the 1920s and 30s that make up most of the municipality today. By the Census Bureau's latest count, 65% of Mt. Lebanon's roughly 14,600 homes were built before 1960, an older stock than Allegheny County as a whole.
The styles from those decades are what we see on our estimates: Tudor Revival and Colonial Revival above all, plus Craftsman bungalows, Foursquares, and the occasional Spanish Mission or French-inspired house, most of them in brick and stone. Steep gables, multiple dormers, and brick chimneys are the norm, and every one of them is a flashing detail that has to be done right.
What those houses need now
On a Mt. Lebanon roof the shingles are rarely the whole story. The chimneys were often flashed with tar decades ago instead of cut-in counterflashing, dormer step flashing has been patched more than once, and some roofs carry two layers of old shingles over boards that need checking. A complete tear-off lets us see the deck and fix what's under it rather than covering it.
Windows are the other big item. Original wood sashes and first-generation vinyl replacements are both common here, and on houses this age every opening is measured individually because very few are square. Homes built before 1978 are handled under EPA lead-safe work practices whenever we disturb painted trim.
Historic district, permits, and stormwater
Much of the municipality's older core sits inside the Mt. Lebanon Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2014 and covering about 4,400 properties. A National Register listing doesn't by itself restrict what a private owner does to a house, but it is a good reason to choose materials that suit the architecture, and we bring samples to the house so you can judge them against your brick and stone.
The municipality requires a building permit for structural roof repairs and for some window replacements, and when a job needs one, we pull it. Mt. Lebanon has also billed a stormwater fee based on each property's impervious surface since 2011, which says something about how seriously it takes runoff. When we replace gutters and downspouts we talk about where the water is going, not just how the gutters look from the street.

Mt. Lebanon requires a building permit when a roof job includes structural repairs, and for some window replacements, such as those that change the size of the opening. If your job needs one, we handle the permit as part of the work.
