Ireland Contracting is a Pittsburgh deck builder designing, building, replacing, and repairing decks across Allegheny, Butler, and Beaver counties. We build TimberTech composite and pressure-treated wood decks with matching railing, every one framed to Pennsylvania code and finished by our own crews, the same team that has handled the region's roofs and siding since 1994.

A deck is the one exterior project you live on, so the substructure matters more than the boards. We set footings below the frost line, frame with properly sized joists and ledger flashing that keeps water out of the house, and use structural hardware throughout, the part nobody sees and everybody relies on. Then we lay the decking and railing you chose, sized and styled to fit your yard and how you actually use it.

We are a TimberTech authorized installer. TimberTech's PVC and composite boards don't splinter, stain, or rot, resist moisture, mold, fading, and insects, and carry fade-and-stain warranties from 25 years to lifetime depending on the collection. If you'd rather build in wood, we install pressure-treated decks too, and we'll give you a straight answer on which way we'd lean for your deck and budget.

Deck repair and replacement: not every tired deck needs to come down. We replace rotted boards and stair treads, re-secure loose railings, add missing joist hangers and ledger bolts, and rebuild failing stairs. When the frame itself is soft or the ledger has been leaking into the house, we'll tell you plainly that replacement is the better value, and an old wood deck with a sound frame can often be resurfaced in composite for a fraction of a full rebuild.

Railing, stairs, and extras: choose TimberTech vinyl, powder-coated aluminum, or composite railing to match the boards, plus wide stairs, built-in benches, privacy screens, low-voltage lighting, and covered pavilions. Because we also do siding, roofing, and gutters, we can tie the deck into the house cleanly and handle the whole back of the home in one project.

Decks built for Pittsburgh's freeze-thaw

Western Pennsylvania is hard on decks. Wet springs, humid summers, and dozens of freeze-thaw cycles each winter drive water into wood, pop fasteners, and heave footings that weren't set deep enough. Most of the failing decks we're called to in Mt. Lebanon, Shaler, Cranberry, and Fox Chapel share the same causes: shallow footings, an unflashed ledger that has been leaking into the rim joist for years, and untreated cut ends that rotted from the inside.

We build for that climate. Footings go below the 36-inch frost line, the ledger is flashed and bolted rather than nailed, joists are spaced for the board you chose, and every cut end on a wood deck is sealed. Composite decking sidesteps most of the moisture problems entirely, which is why it has become the default for homeowners who don't want to stain a deck every other year.

Every deck we build is permitted and inspected under the Pennsylvania Uniform Construction Code, with guardrail height, stair rise, and ledger attachment done to spec, so it passes inspection, and so it's still solid when you sell the house.

Our decks process

1. 1 Site visit & design. We look at the yard, grade, door height, and sun, then talk through size, shape, stairs, and railing so the deck fits how you'll use it.
2. 2 Materials & itemized estimate. We walk you through TimberTech collections and railing styles versus pressure-treated wood, and give you a written, itemized estimate, with no per-square-foot guessing.
3. 3 Permit & footings. We pull the building permit, dig and pour frost-depth footings, and schedule the required inspections.
4. 4 Framing. Flashed and bolted ledger, sized joists, structural hangers and post bases, built to pass inspection and last.
5. 5 Decking, railing & finish. Boards laid with hidden or color-matched fasteners, railing set plumb, stairs and extras installed, then a full clean-up and walkthrough.
