Soffit and fascia do two jobs that don't look related until they fail. Fascia is the vertical board at the roof edge: it carries the gutters and closes off the ends of the rafters. Soffit is the underside of the overhang: it keeps weather and animals out of the eave and, through its vents, pulls fresh air into the attic so heat and moisture can leave at the ridge. When either one rots, the gutter starts pulling away, water runs back into the eave, and the attic stops breathing.
Repair or replacement? A single rotted fascia section behind a gutter that's sagging, or a soffit panel a squirrel has opened up, is a repair. We cut out the bad wood, sister or replace the sub-fascia and any rotted rafter tails, and put the gutter back on solid material. When the paint is failing along the whole eave, the wood is soft in more than one spot, or the house has no soffit vents at all, replacement is the better value: new aluminum fascia and vented soffit over sound wood, done once, never painted again.
What's under the aluminum matters. Most Pittsburgh eaves are original wood, and the usual shortcut is to wrap it in aluminum without looking at it. We don't cap rot. Soft fascia and sub-fascia come out and get replaced, rafter tails are repaired, and only then does the aluminum go on, so the gutter hangers have something to bite into and the rot doesn't keep spreading under a clean-looking cover.
Ventilation is the part most homeowners never see. An attic needs air coming in low at the soffit and leaving high at the ridge. Without soffit intake, ridge vents do nothing, summer heat cooks the shingles from underneath, and in winter the warm attic melts snow that refreezes at the cold eave as an ice dam. New vented soffit is often the cheapest fix for an ice-dam problem, and it's why we treat soffit as roofing work, not trim.

Roof-edge problems on Pittsburgh homes
Pittsburgh's damp shade and freeze-thaw are hard on the wood at the roof edge. The pre-war homes in Mt. Lebanon, Bellevue, and Squirrel Hill have painted wood eaves that have been scraped and repainted for ninety years, and the paint is usually the only thing holding the bottom of the fascia together. The 1950s and 60s ranches and split-levels in Ross, Shaler, and Bethel Park have wide overhangs with plywood soffit that delaminates once the gutter overflows onto it a few winters running.
Overflowing and sagging gutters are the usual cause. Once fascia softens, the gutter spikes lose their grip, the gutter tips back, water runs behind it into the eave, and the rot accelerates, which is why we look at the gutters on every fascia call and re-hang them properly when the fascia is done.
Gaps in failing soffit also let squirrels, birds, and insects into the eaves and attic, a constant problem on the region's tree-lined streets. Closing the eave properly with vented aluminum keeps the animals out while letting the air in.

- 1 Inspection. We check the fascia, sub-fascia, soffit, and rafter tails for rot, look at how the gutters are hung, and check whether the attic actually has intake ventilation.
- 2 Repair or replacement plan. You get a written, itemized estimate that says which sections are repairs and which eaves should be replaced, and why.
- 3 Rot removal & repair. We remove rotted wood, replace sub-fascia and rafter tails as needed, and address any decking or moisture damage at the roof edge.
- 4 Installation. We install aluminum fascia and vented soffit with proper venting and a clean, finished look, then re-hang the gutters on solid material.
