Fiber cement and composite: James Hardie fiber cement is noncombustible, resists moisture and woodpeckers, and comes in the Engineered for Climate formulation for our region. Everlast advanced composite is a mineral-and-polymer board with the color all the way through. It won't swell, split, or rot, and it never needs painting. Both are the right choice when you want the house done once.

Vinyl siding: for most budgets, a quality vinyl is the smart answer, and the product matters more than the label. We install Mastic Quest (.046-inch panel, wind-rated to 163 mph), Mastic Cedar Discovery shake-and-shingle, Mastic Board & Batten, and Norandex Great Barrier clapboard and Dutch lap. Insulated vinyl adds a foam backer that stiffens the panel and cuts heat loss through the wall, worth it on the region's uninsulated 1950s and 60s homes.

Siding repair: not every problem needs a full re-side. We repair storm-cracked and wind-lifted panels, replace rotted trim and sections behind a leak, and re-secure siding that's pulling away. Where a discontinued vinyl can't be matched, we'll show you the closest profiles and colors before we start, and tell you honestly when a wall or two is better replaced than patched.

Siding built for Pittsburgh's homes and weather

Pittsburgh's housing stock tells you what's under the siding. The 1950s and 60s ranches in Shaler, Ross, and Bethel Park mostly wear original aluminum that has chalked and dented; the pre-war homes in Mt. Lebanon, Dormont, and Bellevue often have asbestos-cement shingle or cedar under a later layer of vinyl. Each comes off differently: aluminum is stripped and recycled, cedar is inspected for rot, and asbestos-cement shingle is removed intact and disposed of properly rather than broken up. On any home built before 1978 we follow lead-safe work practices when we disturb painted trim.

Then there's the weather. Wet springs, humid summers, and dozens of freeze-thaw cycles a winter push water behind loose or cracked siding and into the sheathing, which is where the rot and the energy loss actually happen. That's why we tear off rather than overlay, why every wall gets house wrap and flashed openings, and why we steer homeowners toward James Hardie, Everlast, or a heavy-gauge insulated vinyl over builder-grade panels that oil-can in the sun and crack in the cold.

1. 1 Consultation & selection. We look at the walls, trim, and what's under the current siding, then help you compare fiber cement, composite, and vinyl lines with samples at the house.
2. 2 Measure & itemized estimate. Precise measurements per wall and a written, itemized estimate that shows the material, trim, and any sheathing allowance.
3. 3 Tear-off & inspection. We remove the old siding, inspect the sheathing and house wrap, and repair moisture damage before anything goes back on.
4. 4 Wrap, flash & install. New house wrap, flashed windows and doors, then siding and trim installed to manufacturer spec.
